Redwood This is the most common wood used in spas and hot tubs. It is the
dominant cabinet material because most hot tub manufacturers are located in
California, where redwood is abundant. The quality of redwood can vary greatly
among lumber mills, so check with the spa manufacturer for information about
what grade of redwood they use.
Cedar There are two types of cedar commonly used in spas and hot tubs:
1. Western Red Cedar. This wood is characterized by deep, rich color
tones. It is extremely strong and weather resistant because it grows in areas
with some pretty harsh environments, such as cold climates, rugged coastlines,
etc. The tree must fight to survive along with other plant life and vegetation,
so its wood is very tough. Many high-end home builders use western red cedar for
home siding because it stands up to nature’s abuse while retaining an elegant appearance.
2. Inland Cedar. Inland cedar is a light, blonde wood that doesn’t have
the rich coloration of western red cedar. It grows in milder, non-threatening
climates, so the wood doesn’t develop the extraordinary strength that western
red cedar does.
